Me fait l’ ancien combattant. [READ IN ENGLISH]

This morning, I returned to the pier on North 6th street. This time with my fly rod and a “ fly” that I jerry rigged with old stuff I found in a shoe box , way down in my cellar… When I got to the spot on my bicycle, Roberto was already packing up. « They don’t bite, this morning, hopeless…surely…the wind…or the sun…or the moon…or the cormorans. » He introduces me to his brother-in law. A chubby Puerto Rican with a “Yankee” base-ball cap and a T-shirt  on which is written” WE SUPPORT OUR TROOPS”.

The guy starts to tell me his whole life like it was the most normal and highly important thing to do. « Do you see… there ?” he said, opening his toothless mouth wide open, “I lost them in the Gulf War!” Naively I said: ”Not funny, all these wars, huh ? » Then the guy responded with conviction : « If nobody else dares defend  the weak, it HAS to be us ! and all those « bad guys » who want to destroy our country… MY president told me to go and I will go ! It’s written in the Bible ! WE have to protect the weak !”. Then I dig that it’s better to talk « fishin » than politics or religion and I take my rod out of its case and affix the reel. “What’s that thing ?” asks the veteran.« Do you think you’ll fish with THAT ? And what’s that ? A fly? What’s that for? ». Clearly, aside of putting a bit of fish flesh on his hook as bait, the guy has never heard about fly fishing. Nor the other guys on the pier who look at me with disbelieve… I threw my sinking line over the fence, and…no kidding… as soon I jiggle the so called “ ly” a little snapper gulps it. The other fishermen made a strange face as I caught 2 others. O.K, not monsters, but enough to convince the Latinos of the effectiveness of the technique. Then, I caught a condom size XL in fairly good shape. Everybody is laughing and my rating is falling rapidly… then… nothing at all ! Few minutes later, the excitement came back. A guy just landed an ENORMOUS stripped bass. REALY ENORMOUS !! I ask Roberto: « what’s gonna happen with that  fish ?” “ Well, the guy will barbecue it, of course!”. « Is it not dangerous to eat fish from that river? ». « Listen , Fleche, I’ve been eating fish from the East river for more than 30 years and I’m still alive !”. Nothing to add at that, only: « Come quick to fish in Brooklyn. IT’S A LOT OF FUN !”
