It was by telephone that I got the news: Fleche, we’re leaving for Nepal next week and while we’re gone we thought that you would be the perfect guardian for Hero, our dog. We know how much you love animals. When they brought the dog over, I knew that I was cornered. Hero was a sable colored Labrador. But he wasn’t one of those enormous mutts who, when he decides to give you a big sloppy kiss, bowls you over as though you were a vulgar scarab. No, Hero was a medium sized Lab and his manner of looking at me… well, if it had been a chick who made eyes at me that way… Mamma Mia! Anyway I was cooked.

The next morning my wife begged me: C’mon honey, make an effort; take Hero fishing with you. » What, take a dog fishing? Why not a pregnant woman or the girl scouts while I’m at it? But when my wife cracks one of her smiles, one of her famous smiles, I know that my resistance will melt like butter in a hot pan. So, there we were in the car, the two of us, the dog and me heading for the river. Hero watched the traffic, sitting straight up in the passenger seat. I believe I even heard him say: « Look at that fucker, he drives like a shit head. Probably won his license in a lottery. »  I really believe he said that, but after  all these years I couldn’t swear to it. I parked the car past the gorge of Ruoms near the abandoned house and we descended the path to the river. No wind, no canoes or kayaks, no campers; an ideal fishing day, a gift from the gods. No one to hassle me except, perhaps… the mutt? In reality, now that I think about it, my fears were totally unfounded and this fishing jaunt with Hero was probably one of the most peaceful and joyful I have known. Total bliss. In a low voice I commanded him: « Stay behind me!  » and the poor devil didn’t  move a paw, waited the whole time while I made clean sweep of the pool until the moment I whispered: « Now, my boy, it’s your turn! » Well, you need the talent of a Kipling or a Jack London to describe the power and the joy of that leap into the water, the enormous waves; to make it short and sweet, it was an « orgasmic » vision.  And when I said to this adorable dog: « O.K.Hero, that’s enough, let’s go », he stopped.  Together we crossed the stream toward a new playground and it was my turn to become an orgasmic vision. Finally, exhausted and dying of hunger, we returned home. I fried the only trout that I kept and gave half to Hero who swallowed it so fast that, for a long time he turned around in circles like a crazy, wondering what happened to his ration. Later I closed the shutters of the bedroom and I stretched out on the bed for the indispensable siesta. I closed my eyes, but not completely, just enough to savor the pleasure of the sun’s rays filtering through the shutters (thank you, Yvan Audouard!). The cicadas in the pines quieted down. Hero laid down close to me and immediately started snoring. It didn’t take long for me to follow suite.
