I am a completely euphoric man and I am going to tell you why. It’s because, quite few years ago, I read all the books by Richard Brautigan (in french) and thought  (and I wasn’t the only one to think it) that this guy is one of the most important american writers of the past century. What’s more he fished regularly with Tom McGuane (the best friend of Jim Harrison) and that was enough for me.

For Christmas last year my fabulous wife gifted me with a collection of the complete works of the great Richard… in english. I would love to say that I learned English only for the pleasure of reading these texts in their original tongue, but that would be an enormous lie. I’m up to the fourth book: « Tokyo Montana Express » which is the juice of life in it’s purest form. There is no one who can tell a little story, seemingly banal, and give you the impression that you are an explorer setting foot in completely virginal territory. Disequilibrium and innocence of vision, WOW!  For instance he says: « It’s so nice to wake up in the morning and not have to tell someone you love them when you don’t love them anymore ». (If you don’t find this phrase magnificent, you must be a big block of porous cement and I don’t ever want to talk to you again!)

The back cover of this marvelous book instantly gives the tone of the book. The legend under the photo reads: « Richard Brautigan and Shiina Takako lolling in a small boat off the coast of Japan. It was a hot afternoon and they were tired of fishing. »
