This afternoon, finaly the sky cleared up. After this long winter, dragging my feet in the river became vital. In a hurry i packed my fishing stuff  in the car and flew away. Twice i had to go back home. First, i had forgot my reel. The second time it was my wading shoes thet i had left in the barn.

Each time my wife watched me backing up in the court yard with her marvellous smile that said ” my poor lovey ! “. Then finaly i was able to drive past the bakery of our village and , almost by herself, my car parked next to MY river: La Beaume.. O.K , i could have driven longer to  reach fishy spots on the route of Valgorge, climb down those cliffs and wait like a heron for an allusive trout  to sip that thing i’m sure i didn’t have the right imitation in my fly box anyway ! Another time !

Today; i just want to put my feet in the water, feeling the force of the current on my thighs and too bad if some tourists are throwing stones in the river, too bad if the hoard of kayaks are spooking the rare fish. I smell the water. That special smell ! I touch and carress my water and suddenly, i’m carried back in time.

Three years ago. That precise spot. Exactly right there. My good friend Oli was spending few days with us, in the Ardeche. Not feeling too well my poor buddy. That fucking illness was slowly winning but Oli insisted on fishing with me that day. And it was right at this section of the river that i brought him. Easy access, didn’t have to run on slippery rocks. Oli was having trouble keeping his equilibrium. But fuck it, he wanted so badly to fish another time, that bastard ! Only once ! Anything ! And the miracle happened.

He landed his fly on the edge of the river, close to the bank where the water flow is calmer and a little fish got tempted. Oli’s face at that moment, i’m not ready to forget it !. Sunshine ! A 200 pounds tarpon would not have produced a better effect on my friend. A few months later, Oli left us for better fishing in Heaven’s water. Thankfully i keep the memory of that incredible smile of a child that was his. He was so gorgeous that fucker and we miss him so much !
