The new Rio Pike/Musky flylines have just arrived on the French market. Those lines are aimed (as indicated by their names) at pike and musky flyfishing.

The first thing we notice on those new flylines is the new “camo” color (notably on the belly), relatively original for a flyline. This color is made of brown, yellow, green and translucent segments of 50cm in length. I personally really appreciated this color, and found it effectively very discreet. The profile of this flyline is inspired from the shooting head-like flylines, like the famous Outbound and Outbound Short at Rio’s. These are thus typically recommended for the one who wants to cast big flies easily and within only a couple of false casts. They are available in #8 to #11, floating and intermediate; the #10 et #11 (intermediate) are respectively sold with the new Sage Pike and Musky, rods, that we will present soon on le Mouching. And if Sage has chosen those lines for their rods, it shouldn’t be by chance.

Like all Rio flylines, they are extremely slick. They load the rod very well and are very efficient to cast a streamer accurately close to the bank. With the new Sage Pike rod, this flyline has given me a lot of satisfaction. One thing however, it does not tangle less than another flyline.

Rio comes once again with an excellent product. If it’s not a revolution, it is very well done, and deserves merit. I’m now really hoping that Rio will make this flyline with their new ConnectCore technology (as for the Rio Perception flyline), to have a quasi no-stretch flyline (as for the Airflo ones), and ease both strike detection and hook up. And personally, I’d be happy to see them with higher densities, up to S7 or S8…
