I’ve always heard that untill beginning of 20th centhury, in all the South West of France, farm hands asked in their contracts that they should not eat salmon more than 3 times a week… but since there was no paper contracts…it’s hard to prove…nevertheless the Garonne, the Dordogne, the Allier, the Loire, the Gaves were all filled with salmons untill Mr and Mrs Gimmepower started to build dams and that corn and intensive agriculture killed the rest of the salmon population (not mentionning the nets at sea…)…Well once, France was a fantastic country for salmon fishing. A few days ago, Vincent Magne, a fly fisher from Limoges went to Argentat on the DOrdogne, well known place for its trouts and graylings, and started to fish with those big fat caddis we have in the evening. He spotted a rse close to him and at the first drift of his fly got shaken by a jolt! He thought he had caught a big trout, but after an epic fight, much to his surprise, he found out it was a salmon that he released after a few pictures. Happy man! Dordogne is a fantastic river, full of surprises. Mr Jean Calmejane, a few years ago caught a 70 cm sea trout also in Argentat ! Long live Salmon! Pleace, Mr & Mme Acidici, can’t you get rid of your dams? [slideshow]
