Autumn leavesIn French the lyrics by Jacques Prévert goes like this: Dead Leaves, you pick them up with a chovel as memories and regrets too… not very enthousiastic but the whole song is so romantic and Vladimir Kosma’s music is the best! For us, fly fishermen, Autumn Leaves mean so much more, it’s the end of the season, the trout are shopping for proteins and will jump on almost everything, the country is flamboyant, days turn shorter and the forest turns brown, it’s chilly in the morning and the wind starts to blow. The wind, our enemy, he brings down from the trees all those leaves as little red and yellow boats floating down the river, it would be nothing if it wouldn’t prevent us to cast, see the fish, land our line and so on. So here’s to cheer you up, Autumn leaves by Chet Baker, for this one time he played with what was going to become the crême de la crême of Jazz rock as we call it, or fusion. As if he wanted to tell them, “guys I know you are going to do something really weird with Jazz, maybe as ugly as the sweater I’m wearing, but let me tell you something, real feellings come from Bebop in Jazz, so before you do something strange, let all remember what emotions are all about”! Ugly sweaterThis piece is a gem. the way it’s played with the guts instead of the brains it’s as someone would get inside of you and squeeze your heart. Listen to them, Paul Desmond (alto sax), bob James (Keyboards), Ron Carter (contrabass), Steve Gadd (drums) filmed by Bruno Barrios Cabrejos, this is the perfect music to listen to when you’re driving back home after a fishing day.
