When they taught you the basics, they probably showed you the overhead and the roll cast. And the roll cast is a spey. Spey is not about salmon or 15′ two handed rods, it’s not about Scotland or British Columbia. It’s just anchoring your line on the water before shooting it. There are tons of ways to do that. It prevents many tree hook ups on the backcast. It requires some technique, but very little power. It’s efficient, it’s elegant. And you can perfectly do spey on a 7’4 4wt glass rod. Proof:
