A real fishing trip, not a stroll 100 yards from the parking lot, no. A trip on foot and by kayak through a completely wild part of Montana, “The Bob”!

You’ve been warned: your thighs will ache a little from all the walking, but your forearms will be especially sore from the fish you’ll have to hog-tie! Plenty of chunky trout, with music to accompany you and no blah, blah, blah to distract you. You’re all set, it’ll keep you dreaming for at least a day!

It had been exactly 10 years since Neil and I made our first voyage into “The Bob”, a vast wilderness complex in northwestern Montana, full of jagged peaks, wildlife, and pristine rivers. A wild and scenic landscape of the highest order. The crown of the continent. That first trip opened our eyes to a world of DIY adventures, and the following decade, inspired by our time in The Bob, was full of them. We returned last summer to recreate the adventure. No longer burdened by heavy, cumbersome loads, or the anxiety of traveling alone in the wilderness, we traversed from south to north with great ease. It was a time to reflect on past exploits, to see how far we’d come, and perhaps, to catch a glimpse of where we might be headed. We were joined by our friend Sean Sullivan, and together we enjoyed eleven days of hiking, camping, and fly-fishing. A flow through The Bob.
