Apart from my painful toe that I scraped on the coral and three or four bonefish that I startled with my shitty casts, the morning had been uneventful on the Belize flats when Fabian our guide, abruptly pointed his finger toward the distance and whispered: « Bonefish! »

A quarter of an hour later, in spite of my congenital clumsiness, I released a great magnificent fish, proof if it was needed, of the existence of the God of fishermen. Barely recovered from this heightened emotion I noticed, about 20 meters away, an enormous expanse of red, like a flower on the water’s surface. Fabian explained: « A BIG barracuda just ate your bonefish ».

It was a little past noon; the barracuda had just tucked away his lunch.  Me too, my stomach began to give me clear signs of impatience. I couldn’t stop thinking about the good fortune of this barracuda, the luck to be able to dispatch a fresh fish without the Ayatollah of « catch and release » pointing a finger covered with opprobrium; the disrespect for nature accusation; you know the drill…

Since then, on certain nights, I dream of being reincarnated as a barracuda.
