It’s finally here!
This autumn’s novelty by Temple Fork Outfitters, the Drift Nymph rod is a bit of a revelation as there has not been any comparable item available in the TFO rod lineup so far. Based on a specially designed, fine-tipped and nervous 3-weight, 9-foot rod, the kit comes complete with extension sections that allow to rod to be lengthened (or shortened, for that matter) in seconds and on the water, if necessary, effortlessly to lengths of 10’, 11’ 3” or, amazingly, 12’ 3”!
TFO calls it “The Definitive Nymph Rod” and specialists concur, it’s quite special as all nymph-fishing bases are covered. Newly designed “semi-open” stripping guides on the conversion sections allow to securely insert the fly line from the side, avoiding any re-threading, Genius!
The Home Run, so to speak is the possibility to remove the cleverly counter-weighted butt and replace it with a grip extension, effectively turning the rod into a very fine “Microspey” rod that, in lengths of 11’3” and 12’ 3” has a great action, (especially in 11-feet-3!) that makes water-borne casts happen with a conventional floating weight-forward 5- or 6-weight line, tried and approved. Smells like great wet-fly fishing and perfect line control. Tinkerers will come up with a custom-made shooting head (when ringing up TOF in Belgium, ask for Marc!), but that’s a different story altogether…!
The Drift rod comes complete with extension handle, counterweighted butt, conversion sections in several lengths in a rod sock and a very ingenious aluminum rod carrier, open on either end for facilitated access. As a side note, we’d use that rod carrier in a pinch on our travels as well, there’s room for at least 2 conventional fly rods.
Available at TOF Fly fishing in Belgium and selected fly shops in Europe, come try out the TFO Drift rod at fly fishing shows where TOF will be attending this season.
