It is an amazing story, several stories merging into one in fact. The story of a guy who buys a trunk at an auction. The story of a nunny who works for the wealthies in the 50’s and gets to live in New York, Paris and Chicago and travels the world taking care of kids. It’s the story of a secret revealed to the world once she’s passed away. Vivian Maier wasn’t only a nunny she was the photographer who took over 100 000 pictures found in this trunk sold at the auction. Hundred thousand pictures! Always taken with no one knowing what she was really doing or who she was. She hid herself to be Vivian the photographer vs VIvian the nunny. Her work is on the same level as Cartier-Bresson, Weegee, Doisneau. An amazing solitude, so humble, total abnegation. I bought the book this morning and I can’t get my eyes out of it. Get it for yourself or for a friend. Watch the trailer from the documentary that has been made about her, There is an exhibition going around the world , check it out, it might be not far from you.
