Le béret

There is no translation, a “béret” is a “béret”! For some it might be a communist revolutionary hat, for others, a French shepherd’s hat. The idea that it is a revolutionary hat is wrong. First it is a Basque hat, French or Spanish, it’s made out of felt, with a leather band inside to hold to your head. Than people realise it was such a nice, wam hat it became the national French hat, if you want to describe a “French”, you’l always think about him as wearing a stipped shrit, a “béret”, a bottle of wine and a “baguette”. But honestly, it’s the best hat you can find, even the army wears it, you can roll it, it’s warm and you can give it any shape you want! In the 19th centhury, when the Basque famin pushed their inhabitants away from their motherland, many of them (almost all of them) moved to Argentina, the promised land, and they took with them their “béret”. It became the national Gaucho hat! So when Mr Enesto Guevara arrived to Cuba to help the revolution, he was wearing a “béret” what else? That’s how the béret became a revolutionary hat.. But let me tell you something, from where I’m from in the mountains of Aubrac, everyone wears a béret, and it is indeed the best hat ever, always elegant, always warm, sheltering you from the rain, the snow, the sun… it’s the best! Do as the Che, Castro, Hemingway, Picasso, Garbo, John and Yoko, Bardot, Le Mouching, Get one !
