It’s not that often someone comes up with a design that looks like good out-of-the-box thinking. Well, here’s one. It’s a grip design by Holland Ney of Anadromous Rods, on a Swift Epic fiberglass blank 8’6 6wt. I’ve hardly heard anything but raving praise about that blank, it seems to be an indestructible cannon. Cameron Mortensen, worldwide famous because of the Fiberglass Manifesto, quotes Ney saying: “The Epic 686 has matching wraps, dyed orange Buckeye reel seat, and split ergo grip.  This handle idea came to me one day and I immediately started playing with the idea.  After several versions this was the winner.  I can not explain how comfortable this grip is and I designed it to fit the shape of my hand at rest.  The oversized ball section of handle fills up the palm and area between the thumb and fore finger.  The ring and small finger fall into exposed blank area, while the heel of hand is supported by the extreme swoop above reel seat.  The design makes holding and casting the rod effortless, while pushing the limits of design.”

I turn my own grip on the rods I build. I’m thinking about giving it a try.
